REFERENCE / INTERPRETATION
A PAINTING,
NOT A
REPRODUCTION.
I often work from photographs.
Sometimes an existing photograph already contains exactly the expression, composition or moment I want to work from. Other times I prefer to photograph the subject myself or develop the reference digitally before beginning the painting.
The photograph is reference material rather than a set of instructions.
Colour, composition, emphasis, atmosphere and detail may change as I work. The aim is to make a painting that captures something of the subject's character, mood or presence — not simply reproduce the photograph in paint.
WORKING WITH THE SUBJECT
OPTIONAL / USEFUL
Where possible, I like to understand a little more about what I am painting.
For a portrait this might mean meeting the sitter, taking my own reference photographs, having a sitting, or simply talking for a while in person or over the phone.
For an animal, place or landscape, photographs, stories and small details about the subject can serve the same purpose.
None of this is required.
Strong reference photographs may be all that is needed, but the more useful material I have to work with, the more informed the finished painting can become.
